I manage 40 hives in southern Spain (Andalusia). The summers are very hot and dry (40°C+). I want to avoid chemical treatments and use only organic options like oxalic acid, thymol, or formic acid. Which works best in our climate and when is the ideal treatment window?
For hot Mediterranean climates, oxalic acid vaporization (OAV) is your best option. The key is timing: treat during the natural broodless period in late summer (August-September in Andalusia) when the colony has no capped brood. A single OAV treatment during broodlessness achieves 95%+ efficacy. For thymol (e.g., ApiLife VAR), it works well but requires temperatures between 15-30°C — in Andalusian summers above 35°C, it can harm the bees. Apply thymol in spring (April-May) before the heat arrives.
I'm in Japan where summers are also very hot and humid. I've had good results with oxalic acid drizzle in autumn when the queen stops laying. For the hot summer period, I use formic acid pads (MAQS) in the cooler morning hours only. One important tip: always check the temperature before applying any organic acid — above 35°C, formic acid can kill your queen.
